Takeley Occasional Golf Society or TOGS as we are known, came together loosely in 1990. A group of friends in Takeley, some who were members of local Golf Clubs and others who were ‘Social’ Golfers
regularly met at the Takeley Sports & Social Club and occasionally arranged a ‘four ball’ at different local venues. The people they talked to in the Club thought it was a great idea to play at various courses and
wanted to be included in the numbers. As the word spread it became apparent that there were quite a number of like-minded individuals and eventually a meeting was arranged and TOGS was born.
The philosophy of the Club is for everyone to have a full ‘Stress free’ day away from the pressures of modern life playing 5 or 6 venues a year, so as not to put too much pressure on days off work / holidays and avoid the main Holiday period of July/August. Our ‘season; runs from Late March / Early April through to October.
We have tried over the years to play as many different Golf Courses as possible choosing as many top quality Golf Clubs as we can. Membership has varied over the years between 30 and 40 and members come from Takeley, Harlow, Henham, Stansted, Great and Little Dunmow, Elsenham, Bishops Stortford and surrounding villages.
Our format is normally to arrive at the course for tea and biscuits or Bacon Rolls followed by 9 holes, Lunch, 18 Holes and a formal evening meal with a presentation of trophies for the days golf.
We normally include a two day event every year (Sunday Afternoon / Monday morning) which includes an overnight stay. The cost of each outing varies depending on the quality of the Golf course but because we have a large number of people we take along, we normally get very good discounts, which would not normally be available to 2 or 3 people booking a round on their own.
The empathis is very much on the Social side of the day as much as the Golf and the atmosphere is always friendly and ‘laid back’
